Beading a Soldier’s Story – Edmonton

About the Workshop

At The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum in Edmonton, Beading a Soldier’s Story is held among the history of the Regiment itself. Over one guided day, participants learn the protocol for honouring a soldier’s story, research the life of an Indigenous soldier who served in the Regiment, and work alongside Indigenous veterans, Knowledge Holders and beaders. The stories at the heart of the day belong to Indigenous men of the 49th Battalion and The Loyal Edmonton Regiment. Participants read the stories, then choose which campaign ribbon to bead. As they bead, they learn what it means to carry a story. Each person leaves as a keeper of one soldier’s story, responsible for sharing it accurately and respectfully. The day is an immersive cultural experience that includes source document research, beading, traditional foods and teachings, and time with Indigenous veterans, Knowledge Holders and beaders.
